MIRI: The Miri District Police Headquarters (IPD) has recorded an increase in the number of cases for various criminal offences for the period of January 2024 compared to the same period last year.

Miri District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said this included commercial crimes, index crimes, and road accidents.

“Commercial crimes increased by six cases or 22.22 per cent, with 33 cases recorded in January 2024 compared to 27 cases in January 2023.

“For index crimes, there was an increase of 24 cases or 109 per cent, with 46 cases recorded in January 2024 compared to 22 cases in January last year.

“Meanwhile, for road accidents, there was an increase of 26 cases or 8.7 per cent, with 324 cases in January 2024 compared to 298 cases recorded in January last year,” he said when met by reporters after the Monthly Assembly of IPD Miri here today (Feb 15).

However, he said, arrests for narcotics crimes decreased to 30 arrests or 23.8 per cent, with 96 arrests recorded compared to 126 arrests in January 2023.

In the meantime, he emphasised that the IPD Miri personnel needed to intensify patrols to prevent crime in areas prone to criminal activities and suspected drug dens.

“The task of preventing crime and drug addiction is the responsibility of all senior officers, rank-and-file, civil servants, and also involves the role of the public as a whole.

“Therefore, I call on all parties, especially the public, to help and always cooperate with the police in preventing crimes in this area,” he stressed.
