MIRI: A jobless man believed to be a drug trafficker was arrested by police after he caught trying to discard a plastic bag containing drugs at Jalan Berlian here last Sunday.

In the incident that occurred around 1.25pm, an anti-narcotics police team led by Inspector Wikkram Sandra tried to apprehend the 32-year-old man who was riding a motorcycle along the road.

Upon seeing the police, the suspect sped off, prompting the police to give chase. During the chase he was seen throwing a plastic bag into the bushes by the roadside before being stopped by the police for inspection.

During the inspection, the police did not find any illegal substance on the suspect, but upon checking the plastic bag which they retrieved from the bushes, they found 20 plastic packets containing dried leaves believed to be marijuana.

Miri District Deputy Police chief, Superintendent Stanley Jonathan Ringgiet confirmed the arrest and said the suspect had been detained to facilitate investigation under Section 39A (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, 1952.
