Taib gives RM100,000 to Perkim Sarawak for missionary work

KUCHING: Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud has allocated RM100,000 to Perkim (Persatuan Kebajikan Islam Malaysia) Sarawak Division to help needy people in Sarawak.

He said that to assist “da’wah” activities in rural and remote areas, there is a need for more “tahfiz” centres.

Hence, he urged those who live in the city to sympathise and care for the needy by helping to equip them with a strong knowledge of Islam.

In his speech at the 30th anniversary dinner of Perkim at a hotel here yesterday, he also stressed that society should monitor the needy and help them.

“We are living in multi-racial city, and to maintain peace and harmony we need to work together for the development of Sarawak,” he said.

“To make this happen, we should respect other’s religion no matter what. I believe that multi-racial Sarawak we can go further in terms of development. We can be a more advanced state in future.”

Sarawak Perkim chairman, Datuk Hanifah Taib Alsree, said Perkim has done a lot of charity for the community as well as carrying out “da’wah” activities, and providing financial assistance for chronically ill patients, especially those will kidney problems.

“We also organised projects called ‘dry rations’ which provided basic necessities for poor families, elderly people, single mothers and disabled people.

“From time to time we also monitored and visited welfare homes, old folks home, homes of special children including rural hospitals. We want to help them by giving financial aid for them to pay their hospital bills,” she said.

Hanifah also stressed that hopefully Perkim Sarawak would soon have branches in every state division to help reduce the burden of needy people.

She also believes that Perkim would carry out more charity activities for the betterment of the people.

Taib is accompanied by Hanifah as he visits the exhibition before proceeding to the Perkim Sarawak Anniversary Dinner at Waterfront Hotel, Kuching.

Perkim Sarawak Division celebrated its 30th anniversary with various activities consistent with its objectives of taking care of the people.

During the day of the celebration, a forum called “An-Nisa Asas Kecermerlangan” was held in the morning, in regards to matters about women’s leadership and property management (wasiat, faraid and heritage property).

All the activities were fully funded by the public, corporate donors and government agencies.
