KUCHING: Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen has extended his deepest condolences to the family of the late Pehin Sri Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud following his passing this morning.

The Padungan assemblyman said though he had disagreements on certain policies during Taib’s tenure as chief minister, it was undeniable that the leader played a pivotal role in driving the progress of Sarawak.

“He (Taib) had contributed tremendously to the development of Sarawak, laying a strong foundation for the present government to take the state to another level,” he said in a statement today.

Chong, who is also the Stampin Member of Parliament (MP), expressed his gratitude to the former Tuan Yang Di-pertua (TYT) for his contribution and dedicated service in developing Sarawak.

Taib, 87, passed away at 4.40 am at a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur today.
