MIRI: A 19-year-old girl and her 29 year-old boyfriend were detained by the police here on Sunday morning for allegedly dumping a newborn baby.

The foetus was discovered in a shallow grave next to the male suspect’s house in Lambir.

Miri Police chief, ACP Hakemal Hawari said the decomposing body of the foetus, estimated to be around one-week-old, was discovered buried in a shallow grave near her boyfriend’s house at Kampung Bukit Jagus in Lambir the same day.

“Both suspects were apprehended by a team of Miri Criminal Investigation department (CID) around 3.30am that morning,” he said.

Their arrest led to the discovery of the buried foetus.

Preliminary investigation showed that the teenage girl had given birth inside her school’s dormitory room.

The incident unfolded when the school’s warden discovered that the teenager was suffering from excessive bleeding and brought her to Miri Hospital for medical check-up.

A police report was immediately lodged.

The case is being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code for hiding birth and trying to dispose a baby discreetly.
