Tenders process just started

KUCHING: The process of tendering out the work under phase one for the redevelopment of 37 dilapidated schools in the state has just begun. The Technical Committee on the Implementation of Dilapidated Schools Redevelopment in Sarawak under the RM1bil allocations, confirmed this when briefing Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg yesterday. The Technical Committee is co-chaired by the Public Works director-general and state Public Works Department (PWD) director.

Other members are the divisional secretary of development, Federal Ministry of Education, state Education, Science and Technological Research Ministry permanent secretary, state Financial Secretary, state Education director, representatives of PWD Malaysia and PWD Sarawak and the Implementation Coordination Unit.

The committee would submit the progress report to the StateFederal Development Committee co-chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and federal Works Minister Baru Bian, the statement said. On Monday, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said work to fix dilapidated schools in Sarawak had started since Aug 5.

Yesterday’s briefing proved that Abang Johari was not wrong in asking the federal government to expedite the repairs. According to the statement, the names of the affected schools, under phase one of the redevelopment projects, were submitted to the federal government via the Education Department.

Abang Johari said the redevelopment exercise was scheduled to be carried out until the end of December this year. He expressed his appreciation to the committee members; Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Education for their commitment to ensure that the redevelopment initiative is duly implemented for the benefit of the students.
