Three held for gambling offences in Kuching

Police pick up two of three suspects around the district for alleged involvement in gambling activities.

KUCHING: Police here recently arrested three locals who were allegedly running gambling activities around the city in an eight-day operation.

The operation, codenamed Ops Dadu, was carried out by the D7 branch of the Kuching Criminal Investigation Division (CID) from April 8 to 15.

Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah, in a statement, said the team managed to pick up three men who are suspected to be involved in such illegal activities.

Also seized were cash amounting to RM226 and equipment used for gambling purposes.

The police have opened a total of three investigation papers under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

“Two of them will be investigated under Section 4(1)(c) of the same Act for online gambling, which provides for a fine up to RM50,000 and a jail term of up to three years if convicted.

“Meanwhile, another suspect is being investigated under Section 4A(a) of the same Act for unlicensed public lottery, which carries a fine up to RM200,000 and a jail term of up to five years if convicted,” he said.

Ahsmon welcomes the public to continue channelling information related to gambling activities in the district to the nearest police station.
