SIBU: Maintaining town cleanliness alongside improvements to basic infrastructure such as roads and drains will be among the focus areas of the new Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) team, said Clarence Ting.

The newly re-appointed SMC chairman said following the pandemic, the public is even more conscious about cleanliness, and demands for cleaner toilets in food outlets are growing louder and louder.

“We also need to take stringent action against those who continue to discharge unfiltered waste water into the drains that cause blockages.

“Furthermore, we also need to focus on town beautification, making the trees and plants more uniform and neater,” he said at the swearing-in ceremony of councillors for the 2023-2025 term here today (April 2).

“In Sibu, we are on the verge of exciting renewal. The Sarawak government plans to rebuild Bukit Assek. This will totally transform Sibu downtown,” he stressed.

He also urged the councillors to work harder as they have big tasks ahead in these two years which was to make Sibu a better place for everyone to live in.

Ting also called on councillors to prioritise service to the public and serve regardless of political parties, race, creed or religion.

“I would also like to stress the importance of personal integrity serving as a councillor. That means as a councillor, we should not have personal interest in the contracts in the council that we serve in.

“Only this way, we can have the confidence of the public in us to deal with public issues without any self-interest,” he said.
