SIBU: A total of 33 community leaders were appointed for the Dudong area at the Resident’s Office here yesterday (April 25).

The letters were presented by Sibu Resident, Wong Hee Sieng witnessed by Dudong assemblyman, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

Speaking at the presentation of the letters of appointment, Tiong urged the community leaders to work harder, especially those in the rural area.

“I want you especially those in the rural area to work harder. Solve problems that affect the longhouse folk.

“If there are quarrels among the people, don’t take sides. If you are unable to solve their problem, look for the district officer or the Resident. Otherwise, you can also lodge a police report,” he said.

Tiong also reminded the community leaders to serve their respective areas with full responsibility failing which their appointments would be revoked.

“Be on the ground often and don’t switch off your handphone even during the night, especially those who serve in the rural area as the residents will need your help when their place is flooded,” he said.

Tiong also advised the Tuai Rumah to be more attentive to their residents even if they are living in the city.

“Even if you live at the city please make sure you go back to your longhouses at least during the weekend so that your people can meet you and share their problems with you.

“If not then appoint one representative to help you or else when your people have a problem they have no one else to turn to,” he said.

Apart from that Tiong hoped the Pemanca in Bawang Assan will be relocated to his area because most of the Dudong area consists of longhouses.

“There is a Pemanca and a Temenggong for Bawang Assan. I want the Pemanca to move to Dudong while the Temenggong remains serving Bawang Assan,” he said.

Tiong pointed out that since much of Dudong are Iban areas if the residents needs someone of a higher position than penghulu they need to go all the way to Bawang Assan to see the Pemanca.
