Tragic ferry incident: Masing, Nanta express shock

Members of the public can be seen working to get the victims out from the 4WD vehicle that fell into Batang Lupar.

KUCHING: Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing will be going to the site of the accident which claimed the lives of nine people when a four-wheel drive (4WD) they were in fell into the Batang Lupar river from Triso ferry today (Jan 1).

Masing, who is also Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, said his assistant minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi, staff from Sarawak River Board and Public Works Department (JKR) will also be going to the site.

“We will be going to the site to determine the cause of one the most unfortunate ferry accidents in Sarawak,” he told New Sarawak Tribune.

On behalf of the state government, Masing also extended his deepest condolences to the victims’ families.

Meanwhile,  Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi in a post on Instagram also expressed his sadness. 

“I am shocked by the tragedy,” he said.

Nanta, who is also the Kapit MP, also extended his condolences to the families of the victims.
