MMEA detain tugboat for violation

MIRI: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a tugboat and its nine crew members at around 3.3 nautical miles northwest of Kuala Baram on Saturday (April 8) morning.

According to MMEA Miri director Captain Mohd Shafie Paing’s statement, the tugboat was stopped by an MMEA patrol boat at 11 am for violating the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952.

All nine crew members, who are between 27 and 70 years old and include eight Indonesians and one local, have valid documentation. However, they were detained for failing to report a change in captaincy to the port officer.

To report any suspicious activities at sea, the public can contact the Miri Maritime Zone Operations Centre at 085-434055, the Sarawak Maritime Operations Centre at 082-432544, or MERS 999.
