Two locals get 6 months’ jail for substance abuse

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced two local men to six months each in jail for being involved in substance abuse in January this year.

The first accused Iruan Fadizlah Man, 46, pleaded guilty before Senior Assistant Court Registrar Sandy Yvette Freddy to one count under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Sandy ordered the accused to serve his sentence effective yesterday (Feb 22), in addition to undergo police supervision for two years after serving his time.

According to the charges, he committed the offence at Kuching Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) office around 3.15 am on Jan 4.

Hence, he was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 15(1) of the same Act.

According to the facts of the case, he was arrested on suspicion of being involved in substance abuse activity. Urine test conducted on the accused was found to be positive for methamphetamine.

Meanwhile, the second accused Sabu Rahman, 50, was sentenced to six months in jail after pleading guilty under the same offence for being involved in substance abuse activity.

Sandy ordered the accused to serve his sentence effective yesterday and to undergo two years of police supervision after serving his time.

The accused from Kampung Bundak, committed the offence at Padawan Criminal Investigation Division (CID) Office around 4 pm on Jan 18.

Insp Mohd Adzmei Ahmad prosecuted both cases separately while Iruan and Sabu were unrepresented by counsel.
