MIRI: Eighty-eight pieces of Singapore currency notes worth $10,000 which are suspected to be fake were discovered by a money changer at Pelita Commercial Centre here on Tuesday morning. Following the discovery, two local men aged 50 and 53 were arrested on the spot after the duo went to the premises to exchange the fake notes around 10.30am. Miri police chief, ACP Lim Meng Seah when contacted yesterday confirmed the arrest.

Prior to the arrest, the suspects have gone to the premises to exchange the fake dollar notes for Malaysian ringgit. “After they handed over the dollar notes to the money changer at the counter the money changer then took the notes for counting using a machine when the money changer noticed figures on the dollar notes,” said ACP Lim. He added that the machine managed to detect something unusual with the dollar notes.

“The dollar notes also did not fit well in the machine unlike the real ones,” explained Lim. The money changer then immediately alerted the police. A police patrolling team arrived within minutes to arrest the duo. “The two men are being detained for further investigations,” Lim added. The case is being investigated under Section 489 of the Penal Code for forging or counterfeiting currency or bank notes.
