Two teenagers nabbed for reckless driving

KUCHING: Two teenagers’ wish to become ‘Supermen’, were not granted after they were arrested for riding dangerously and recklessly on Friday (Feb 4).

Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah, who confirmed the case, said the operation codenamed ‘Ops Samseng Jalanan’ from 5pm to 11.50pm, was carried out by six traffic policemen at Jalan Sultan Tengah.

“Two teenage boys, aged 14 and 17, were spotted performing ‘Superman’ stunts and racing each other in a reckless way that could harm them and other road users.

“Both teens and their motorcycles were brought to Kuching police headquarters for further action under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.

For the offence of dangerous and reckless riding, the suspects can be fined up to RM15,000, sentenced to jail up to five years as well as liable to license disqualification of up to five years, if convicted.

He added that the police also issued 14 traffic summonses for offences such as not wearing a helmet, no driving license, no front license plate, fancy license plate, expired road tax, modified exhaust and structure parts, and dysfunctional obligatory lights, horns and brakes.

Ahsmon stressed that such an operation would be conducted continuously to locate and eradicate dangerous and reckless motorists in an effort to reduce the fatal accident rate in the district.
