Unemployed man jailed seven months for drug possession

KUCHING: An unemployed man was sentenced to seven months in prison by the Magistrate’s Court here today for the possession of 0.07 grammes of Methamphetamine last October.

Bani, 35, pleaded guilty to a charge read by an interpreter before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

According to the charge, he was accused of possessing Methamphetamine weighing 0.07 grammes on the roadside at Jalan Cahaya Makmur, Bandar Baru Samariang, at approximately 11.30 am on October 18.

For this offence, he was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and could be punished under Section 12(3) of the same act.

If convicted, he could face a fine of up to RM100,000 or imprisonment not exceeding five years, or both.

According to the facts of the case, the police detained a man in a hut along Jalan Cahaya Makmur, on suspicion of being involved in drug activities.

Upon examining the accused, the police found a packet of light blue substance containing crystal-like pieces in his right hand.

The evidence was then taken to the Malaysia Chemistry Department, and the report confirmed that it was Methamphetamine weighing 0.07 grammes.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Inspector Ammarsoffi requested that the accused be given a suitable sentence as a deterrent.
