BALINGIAN: Three chapels — two in Mukah and one in Balingian — will undergo reconstruction and refurbishment works soon.

Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) has approved funding amounting to RM1 million for the purpose.

St Joseph in Kampung Sesok in Mukah and St Mary here each received RM450,000 while the chapel in Kampung Sau, Mukah received RM100,000.

Balingian assemblyman Abdul Yakub Arbi presented the cheques on behalf of Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah, who is also the minister in-charge of Unifor, to the working committees of the respective chapel at a ceremony held at the Balingian Service Centre here on Tuesday (Oct 26).

Present to receive the cheque for Kampung Sau Chapel was Rev Father Joseph Sebastian while Herry Soon Heng and Lawrence Anthony Bri represented St Joseph and St Mary, respectively.

Joseph, Soon and Anthony expressed their gratitude to Abdul Yakub for his recommendation to Unifor pertaining to the funding.

They also thanked the Gabungan Parti Sarawak-led Sarawak government for establishing Unifor as a government agency responsible to look into the welfare of other faiths (non-Muslims) in the state.
