KOTA SAMARAHAN: The newly opened Tun Abang Haji Openg Digital Centre (TAHODC) at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) pays tribute to the late Tun Datuk Abang Openg Abang Sapiee, who made important contributions to Sarawak.

Vice Chancellor of UNIMAS Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim bin Suaidi said the centre’s name change from the Centre for Information Technology Development and Services to TAHODC also honours the efforts of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in advancing state’s digital economy.

“This aligns with UNIMAS’ digital transformation plan, which aims to make the university a leading centre for information and communication technology (ICT) in Sarawak and the nation’s higher education,” Mohamad Kadim said.

He said this in his speech during the officiating ceremony of Tun Abang Haji Openg Digital Centre (TAHODC) at UNIMAS campus here today (August 4).

According to him, the TAHODC was built using the university’s own resources at a cost of RM12 million.

During the event, Abang Johari also unveiled three products: REKA, Learners for Life, and the Master of Education (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages – TESOL) program.

REKA is a rapid system development tool created in-house by CITDS UNIMAS.

The new Learning Management System (LMS) called “Learners for Life” was specifically designed by the Centre for Applied Learning and Multimedia (CALM) to enhance academic program delivery and lifelong learning through flexible, online, and Open Distance Learning (ODL) at UNIMAS.

Furthermore, the MEd TESOL program was introduced to meet the growing demand for qualified English teachers, especially in rural areas of Sarawak and various industries.
