KUCHING: Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers’ Union (KGBS) has urged the government to expedite the completion of dilapidated school upgrading projects statewide.

Its president Ahmad Malie in a statement yesterday said the call was made because the teachers and students of these schools had long waited for the upgrade.

He was referring to Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof’s announcement on the 93 dilapidated schools in Sarawak that have been identified for reconstruction this year using funds from the state’s RM1 bil loan repayment to the federal government.

According to Ahmad, the teachers and students of the dilapidated schools were also keen to enjoy better infrastructure compared to what they currently have.

“KGBS hopes that the government could ensure that all of the upgraded school facilities include classrooms, teachers’ rooms, teachers’ lounge spaces, student hostels, and other infrastructure to ensure that the users could enjoy the facilities.

“In addition, KGBS also called for clean water, electricity as well as good quality internet access to be included in the upgrade,” he said.

Ahmad added that KGBS was confident that the new facilities and infrastructure would boost the motivation of the teachers to continue to serve well and create a fun atmosphere among their students.

Ahmad, on behalf of KGBS, also expressed gratitude to the federal and state governments for their concerns for the issue of dilapidated schools in the state.

“At the same time, KGBS also hoped that other dilapidated schools will also be included in the upgrading projects in addition to the current 93 schools,” he said.
