KUCHING: The Unity Government National Convention, to be held at the World Trade Centre (WTC) Kuala Lumpur on May 14, will be a platform for the top leadership of the unity government to convey their vision and hopes directly to the grassroots machinery.

Political analyst Dr Ammar Redza Ahmad Rizal said some of the debates at the convention will be directed towards the goal of securing undivided support at the grassroots level for the leadership of the unity government.

“Therefore, I believe it is a step to strengthen the leadership of the current unity government,” he said when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune.

He also said that the convention will act as a symbol and a reflection to the public that the components of the political parties involved in the work of unity are able to cooperate in the administration of the country.

“This symbol of strength is essential for the existing unity government to face state elections for several states in two to three months.

“This is a signal to the people that they are basically in agreement. It is also a preparation for the possibility of issues such as seat contests between competing political parties arising,” he added.

However, Ammar said the people are questioning whether this unity will continue in the future.

“Will we see another new component during the next general election? Will political parties like United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) and Democratic Action Party (DAP) no longer compete? The same in Sarawak. Will Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) change their policy and approach towards DAP?” he asked.
