KUCHING: The 60th Malaysia Day celebration is a call for national unity, said senior research fellow at the National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN) Dr G Periasamy.

The theme Malaysia Madani: Unity in Fulfilling Hope (Tekad Perpaduan Penuhi Harapan), he said, holds great significance, especially in light of the increasing polarisation along ethnic lines, which, if not addressed promptly, could lead to long-term negative consequences.

He noted that Malaysia, situated at the crossroads of Southeast Asia, is renowned for its rich tapestry of ethnicity, cultures, beliefs, and religions that have co-existed harmoniously for many decades.

In the midst of this vibrant diversity, he said the essence of unity is the driving force behind the nation’s aspirations for a brighter future.

“The concept of “Malaysia Madani” has emerged as a guiding principle, fostering consensus, inspiring cooperation among diverse ethnic groups, and shaping a unified national identity.

“Unity carries profound importance within society as it symbolises the spirit of coming together despite differences.

“Differences in ethnicity, race, religion, culture, and political views often serve as sources of conflict worldwide.

“However, the resolve to strengthen unity remains the most prudent path to ensuring a stable nation,” he said in a statement.

During the early days of the nation’s formation, he pointed out that Malaysia faced the critical task of integrating various ethnic groups, including Malays, Chinese, and Indians, as well as minority ethnic groups in Sabah and Sarawak, such as Kadazan, Dusun, Bajau, and Iban, into a strong and cohesive entity.

In this endeavour, he acknowledged that the principle of “one nation, one country” emerged as the foundation for promoting unity and harmony.

“The commitment to building a “Malaysia Madani,” as inspired by the Prime Minister, reflects a willingness to acknowledge, appreciate, and celebrate religious, cultural, and regional diversity while creating opportunities for all citizens to work together for the nation’s development and progress,” he added.

He asserted one pivotal element in advancing Malaysia Madani and strengthening unity is a holistic education system.

In this regard, he said education plays a vital role in shaping a positive outlook on diversity and enhancing understanding of various cultures and backgrounds.

“By incorporating elements reflecting the diversity of ethnicity into the curriculum, the younger generation can embrace and appreciate shared values while respecting the differences inherited over the years, guided by the principles and guidelines of the National Principles (Rukun Negara),” he said.

On the other hand, he said the concept of unity is a tangible factor guiding the nation towards stability in the socio-economic development arena.

Through cooperation among ethnic groups in business and industry, Malaysian society has the potential to develop a robust and competitive economy if opportunities and basic needs are distributed fairly and widely across all segments of society.

He said balanced and inclusive partnerships in both sectors are the remedy for achieving a healthy and progressive society.

He added that the role of social media and technology in strengthening ethnic unity should also not be underestimated.

“In this fast-paced and boundless digital era, information and issues shared need to be evaluated to ensure they provide meaningful and beneficial insights to all parties while considering the potential negative consequences if misused or disseminated incorrectly.

“Opposition and disputes are likely to arise if the information distributed is unfavourable to any party, ultimately harming national unity.

“Therefore, a prudent approach is needed when handling and regulating the growing use of social media,” he added.

In the face of a challenging future, he believes “Malaysia Madani” serves as the core and guiding principle in creating a brighter future for the people.

Strong determination for unity will carry this nation through various obstacles and conflicts if people stand together, he said, adding with this spirit, Malaysia can set an example for other nations.

But he stressed that unity and determination are not simple tasks.

“It requires strong efforts and unwavering commitment, as well as a willingness to listen and learn from each other.

“While this process may entail challenges and obstacles, the ultimate success will be profoundly meaningful,” he said.

In confronting various global challenges, such as climate change, economic instability, ethnic disagreements, and differences in political and religious views, he believes that unity and determination are invaluable assets.

“Through unity and cooperation, we can achieve positive change and create a brighter future for future generations,” he stated.

“In this context, every individual, regardless of their background, must play a meaningful role.

“Small yet significant initiatives, such as respecting the views, cultures, and beliefs of others without prejudice, should be applied at all levels.

“This model will undoubtedly nurture the spirit of unity and help create a brighter hope for a better future,” he said.
