SIBU: The upgrading of a 6.75km road connecting Sibu Jaya township to Kong Yit Khim Road project is expected to be completed by January next year, said Aidel Lariwoo.

The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development said that the latest progress on the construction of the project is now at 77 per cent.

Aidel stated that although the project is progressing according to the schedule, there might be delays due to several problems occurring in section 6 of the project.

“There are some minor problems at the road approaching Sibujaya (section 6), approximately 250 metres in length. The contractor will continue to monitor the problem.

“If the problem in section 6 is anticipated, there could be some delay. We need to resolve this properly,” he said when met by reporters during his site visit to the project here today.

The dual carriageway road project comprises six sections, including two river crossings over Sungai Salim and Sungai Belalang.

“The cost of this project is RM95.65 million. Although the current prices for materials are slightly higher than before, we are still sticking to this cost, thanks to the contractor,” he said.

Aidel stressed that the completion of the project will bring changes to the economic outlook of the area.

“Apart from solving the traffic woes, the duration for people from Sibujaya to travel to the town centre will also shorten,” he said.
