WASHINGTON: The US intelligence community (IC) believes that Russia allegedly aimed to denigrate the Democrats ahead of the midterm elections in the United States in 2022, reported Sputnik.

“The IC assesses that the Russian Government and its proxies sought to denigrate the Democratic Party before the midterm elections and undermine confidence in the election, most likely to undermine US support for Ukraine,” the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said in a declassified report on Monday. “We have high confidence in this assessment.”

Russia has repeatedly denied interfering in US elections.

The US intelligence community also assesses that China “tactically” approved efforts to meddle in several US midterm election races involving candidates of both the Republican and Democratic parties, the report said.

On Iran, the report claims that Iran aimed to exploit perceived social divisions in the United States and to undermine confidence in US democratic institutions during the midterm vote cycle.

Moreover, the intelligence community assesses that a range of other foreign actors also tried to undermine US politicians seeking re-election in 2022, according to the report. – BERNAMA-SPUTNIK
