KUCHING: With Valentine’s Day due tomorrow, love is indeed in the air!

Lovers will have planned where to celebrate it and what to buy for their sweethearts.

When it comes to Valentine’s Day, red roses are favourites for ladies because the colour red symbolises true love.

This Valentine’s Day, you can present one rose, or 51 roses. They mean ‘You’re the only one on my mind’.

Sixty-six roses mean ‘Nothing is going to change my love for you’ while 99 roses mean ‘I will love you till the day I die’ and 356 roses mean ‘My love for you grows stronger every day’.

Besides roses, some of the common flowers used during Valentine’s Day are lilies, tulips, sunflowers, baby breath and many more.

But some individuals have decided to do away with roses or other flowers. Instead, they chose to give their sweethearts bouquets of vegetables. Isn’t that unique?

Jason, manager of House of Flower and Gifts Shop located at Mile 3, said that for this year’s Valentine’s Day, he had received a special request to make a bouquet of vegetables.

“The bouquet of vegetables is a special request by a customer who wants to present it to a friend on the special day,” he said laughingly.

Another request from a male customer, he said, was to wrap a bouquet of ‘kangkong’ or water spinach for his wife.

Jason said that he had received similar requests for other occasions and he tried his best to fulfil his customers’ requests.

He added his shop had prepared some bouquets for sale.

“Our Valentine’s Day gifts include flowers, chocolates, bears and others,” he said.

Asked on whether the supply of flowers, particularly roses, was enough this year in view of two festive simultaneous celebrations, namely, Valentine’s Day and Chap Goh Mei, which was also referred as the Chinese Valentine’s Day), Jason replied,” Enough. I ordered my flowers from West Malaysia.”

He added that the prices of roses had increased due to many factors including high transportation costs.

On the response from customers this year, he said so far it was quite alright.
