KUCHING: The Tabuan area and its surroundings are set to become a suburban hub for the city due to rapid ongoing development.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg highlighted the strategic development plans in the area.

“I received a briefing from the developer of Vivacity Megamall about their upcoming projects, which include Vivacity 2 Project, Vivacity Hotel, and The Nest Project,” Abang Johari said.

“These developments will inevitably lead to increased traffic volume. To address this, the Vivacity Megamall developer has decided to widen the road leading to Vivacity. Moreover, the area will be connected to the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) route, providing public transportation as an alternative mode of travel,” he added.

Abang Johari said this during a press conference after attending a briefing on the upcoming development projects at Vivacity Megamall today (June 24).

He further emphasized that due to Vivacity’s central location between Samarahan and Kuching, there is a possibility of it evolving into a satellite area.

“Even with the construction of Vivacity’s second shopping centre, which includes a 50-story building, there will be significant development in the Jalan Wan Alwi area, extending to Swinburne University of Technology as a new hostel will be built there. The development in this area is similar to the mixed development in Mid Valley City, Kuala Lumpur,” he explained.

He reiterated the importance of the ART’s development in addressing traffic congestion between Samarahan and Kuching.

“By 2030, Kuching and Samarahan will be integrated into a development area. This will also attract people to Sarawak for property purchases under the Sarawak-Malaysia My Second Home (S-MM2H) program. Simultaneously, the Vivacity area and its surroundings will be designated as a special development area, inviting investors to contribute and boost purchasing power,” he explained.
