BAU: The entire community here is appealing to the Sarawak government and non-governmental agencies (NGOs) for assistance after they have been badly affected by the recent floods.

Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep said from Wednesday to today (Jan 15), the whole district has been disconnected.

“We have a total of 18 temporary flood evacuation centres opened and 865 flood victims.

“But indirectly, about 6,000 people in Bau were affected because they could not travel to get their necessities and could not go to work.

“During this disaster, utility facilities were also cut off such as in Kampung Serikin, electricity in Kampung Grogo due to landslides, and internet coverage in most places,” he said when met by reporters today (Jan 15) at the Jalan Bau-Kuching traffic light junction.

Henry stated that there are people who are taking care of their family members in the hospital and are stranded there as they are not able to go home due to the floods.

As of today (Jan 15), 1,206 goods (603 for breakfast, 603 for lunch) have been donated to the flood victims. However, the number (of goods) is not the same with the victims’ tally as there are those who could not be reached or could not have the food aid delivered due to the floods.

“We will try to help them, and various agencies under the Bau district office will be taking turns to monitor and help those in need.

“Hence, we are asking the state government to help the people here who are in need because right now we don’t have any help from government agencies or ministries.

“To NGOs or anyone who want to donate essential goods such as food, beds, pillows and others to the people, we welcome them. They can contact the district office and the flood operations centre for the matter,” he said.

He noted that the impact of the flood is huge as many houses were affected by landslides, roads cannot be passed, and churches, mosques and other buildings are submerged underwater.
