GEDONG: Sarawak has been recognised as the country’s economic powerhouse,  said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said those from Peninsular Malaysia had seen and recognised the economic potential of Sarawak.

“Our state is strong, and they (officers) from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (LHDN) came here to see for themselves our state economic growth.

“And now, we heard that some said that for Malaysia, its economic powerhouse is Sarawak.

“Thus, this means that they recognise us on our economic strength,” he said in his speech during the compensation cheque presentation ceremony for Gedong Mini Isthmus master plan project at Gedung community hall yesterday.

Abang Johari also said that he dared to develop Gedong with various infrastructures as Sarawak’s income has increased.

“Therefore, as the people of Sarawak, we must be united. If we are not united, we could not develop our state further.

“And when we are united, our party, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will become stronger,” he said.

Meanwhile, during a press conference, Abang Johari said Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu met him recently in Kuala Lumpur and disclosed that the ministry would help the state in developing its area for food production.

“We have large area for modern agriculture and also our own food production not only for the people of Sarawak but also those in Peninsular Malaysia.

“Although our land is peat soil, we can make use of technology to produce fertilisers. “God willing, by 2030 we will have our own fertiliser production and I think we can have self-sufficient fertiliser for our agriculture and food production,” he added.
