KUCHING: Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh has concurred with the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee’s (SDMC) revised decision to only allow food trading hours between 7am and 7pm, and through online platforms during the Ramadan month as the movement control order (MCO) is still being enforced.

He expressed his disagreement with SDMC’s previous decision to allow food traders to sell takeaway food from their home compounds and also within a timeframe of 3pm to 10pm during the Ramadan month.

“We are still in the midst of fighting the Covid-19 pandemic and efforts to break the chain of transmission are very important. We should not allow any activities which involve crowds.

“Positive cases are still recorded daily, meaning that the chain of transmission is still active and we must ensure that all measures taken to curb the spread are adhered to,” he said.

He said that the community had to minimise human contact and practise social distancing.

“Spend more time with the family, cook at home, and enjoy meals as a family,” he urged.

At the same time, Miro commended the extension of the MCO for another two weeks until May 12 as announced by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Thursday.

“It is a good move to combat this virus by stopping the spread and preventing the creation of new clusters. Life is more important rather than allowing activities that may result in another phase of this pandemic,” he said.

Earlier on Wednesday, SDMC allowed food trading from 3pm 10pm during the Ramadan month, but after receiving constructive feedback from the community via social media, on Thursday they retracted this ruling and adjusted the timing restriction to 7am to 7pm — which encompassed restaurants, hotels, and other food outlets.

They had also previously permitted vendors to sell takeaway food from their home compounds during the Ramadan month. With this revision, food would have to be ordered through online platforms and delivered to customers.
