Music is always popular. The occasions don’t have to be big. Even small ones can attract crowds. The music and musicians only need to be good.

SARAWAK, with its rich cultural heritage and natural wonders, is indeed a treasure trove of attractions that draw tourists from around the globe.

Events like the World Rainforest Music Festival and the Kuching Festival have become renowned highlights, showcasing the region’s diversity and captivating audiences with their unique offerings.

However, the sporadic nature of these events leaves Kuching in a state of dormancy for the majority of the year, leaving both residents and visitors yearning for consistent entertainment and vibrant experiences.

It is undeniable that the government and private sector have successfully organized captivating events that put Kuching on the map.

These occasions have showcased the city’s cultural prowess and have acted as a magnet, attracting tourists eager to indulge in the festivities.

However, relying solely on these sporadic events is not enough to sustain a lively atmosphere throughout the year. Kuching’s city centre, in particular, suffers from being abandoned to oblivion for long stretches of time.

To breathe life into the heart of Kuching, both the government and private sector must invest in organizing activities throughout the year.

This was way back in 2018, but it could and should be held every year, or every other year. What about it?

By diversifying the calendar of events, the city can maintain a steady pulse of excitement and engagement. This requires a shift in mindset, recognizing that the city centre should be a thriving hub of activity year-round, rather than a dormant space waiting for occasional bursts of life.

The government can take the lead by establishing a dedicated committee or agency responsible for curating and organizing a diverse range of activities.

This committee should work closely with local businesses, community groups, and event organisers to ensure a continuous flow of engaging events.

By providing financial support, streamlined permit processes, and logistical assistance, the government can foster an environment where event organizers are encouraged and empowered to bring their ideas to fruition.

The private sector, too, has a crucial role to play in sustaining Kuching’s vibrancy throughout the year.

By investing in event sponsorships and collaborations, local businesses can contribute to the development of a bustling city centre.

This not only benefits their own ventures but also creates a thriving ecosystem that attracts visitors and bolsters the local economy.

With strategic partnerships and sponsorships, the private sector can help fund and promote a variety of events, ranging from cultural festivals to music concerts, art exhibitions, and culinary showcases.

Furthermore, Kuching’s year-round activities should not solely focus on attracting tourists. They should also cater to the needs and interests of the local community.

By involving local artists, performers, and cultural groups, the city can create a sense of pride and ownership among its residents.

Food always attract big crowds. More festivals should be held.

This inclusive approach fosters a stronger sense of community and ensures that the events reflect the diversity and spirit of Kuching’s people.

In addition to organising events, the government and private sector should consider enhancing existing infrastructure and public spaces to facilitate these activities.

This may involve creating dedicated event venues, improving lighting and security in public areas, and establishing an efficient transportation system that accommodates night-time travel.

By investing in the necessary infrastructure, Kuching can position itself as a city that is not only beautiful during the day but also pulsating with life after sunset.

The dream of year-round activities in Kuching is within reach, but it requires a collective effort from the government, private sector, and local community.

By embracing a proactive approach to event planning, investing in infrastructure, and fostering partnerships, Kuching can transform itself into a dynamic destination that never ceases to captivate residents and visitors alike.

Let us not allow the city centre to remain dormant for extended periods; instead, let it thrive as a vibrant and lively hub throughout the year, showcasing the true essence of Kuching’s cultural heritage and captivating the hearts of all who enter its realm.
