MIRI: Voters began arriving at the Miri polling centre as early as 6.45am today.

Chai Leong Fa, 88, was the oldest voter who arrived at SJK(C) Chung San polling centre at 7.15am while the youngest voter was 18-year-old Grace Ling.

“I’m excited and fortunate to be able to vote for the first time in this general election,” said Ling who was accompanied by her mother.

Ling is a student of Labuan Matriculation College and had arrived at the SJK(C) Chung San polling centre at 7am.

Phang casts his vote at 7.58am. There are 12 polling channels in SJK(C) Chung San.

The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate for Miri constituency, Cr Jeffery Phang arrived at the polling centre accompanied by his wife Hii Wei Keong at 7.25am to cast their votes. They were accompanied by Minister for Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew and Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang, who all voted at the same polling station.

There were a total 12 polling channels in SJK(C) Chung San.

Meanwhile, Phang’s two opponents – Datuk Lawrence Lai from Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) and Chiew Choon Man of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) cast their votes at SK Pujut Corner and SMK Riam respectively.

The Miri parliamentary seat has a total of 143,229 registered voters, out of which 40,987 are those aged 18 to 29 years.

The constituency has been represented by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) over the last two terms.
