Call cases recorded for every district in Sarawak April 1-15

KUCHING: A total of 119 fire accident cases were recorded in the state from January until April 15 this year, with residential fires being the highest.

According to statistics from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA), as of April 1 to 14, there were 78 fire emergency calls being recorded, with Miri logging the highest calls at 24.

Of the total 78 fire emergency calls, 27 were associated with bush fire, 15 involved buildings and its interior, while rubbish waste (10), vehicles (6), tools (3), and others (17).

When asked whether the present hot weather increases the risk of house or longhouse fire, State Bomba director Datuk Khirudin said that dry weather could be one of the reason.

“Fire happens due to human negligence, and dry weather is one of the contributing factors.

“Unsafe actions, unsafe behaviours and unsafe conditions are high probabilities of fire occurrence,” he said.

He further stated that the 3L syndrome, ‘Leka’ (distracted), ‘Lupa’ (forgetfulness) and ‘Lalai’ (carelessness) also contributed to fire accidents.

“Extra precautions, preventions and protections can help to reduce any chances of fire accidents,” he said.

He advised that during fire accidents, those who were involved must be well prepared to act quickly and know exactly what needs to be done.

Khirudin also urged the public to always be vigilant and remember that fire does not select its victims.

“My best advice is always be vigilant, especially homeowners and longhouse residents, remember to avoid the 3L syndrome.

“Always be on alert, and hire certified and qualified wiremen to fix any wiring problems or renovations and always use SIRIM approved electrical appliances.

He further advised the public to keep away matches from children and to have functioning portable fire extinguishers, and to place the extinguishers at a reachable and noticeable area.
