KUCHING: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDN) has deployed approximately 200 enforcement officers in preparation for the upcoming Gawai celebration.
KPDN Secretary-General Datuk Azman Yusof said that these officers will oversee the smooth implementation of the Festive Season Maximum Price Scheme (SHMMP), which is effective from May 29 until June 4.
“This strategic approach allows us to carry out enforcement more effectively, addressing consumer complaints promptly and taking necessary actions against non-compliant traders,” said Azman.
He said this during a visit to Farley Supermarket, Mile 6,in conjunction with the SHMMP Gawai 2023 yesterday.
The scheme covers a total of eight controlled items, with an additional six types of goods added to the chicken and chicken eggs category since February 5, 2022.
The controlled items under the scheme are live chickens, chicken wings, garlic, imported round cabbage, imported potatoes, live pigs, pork (belly), and pork (meat and fat).
Addressing concerns regarding the shortage of sugar, Azman clarified that the issue has only been reported in Peninsular Malaysia and does not affect Sabah and Sarawak. He further assured the public that discussions have taken place with sugar producers to ensure sufficient supply nationwide, amounting to 42,000 metric tons per month.
During the press conference, KPDN Sarawak Director Matthew Dominic Barin, KPDN Deputy Director of Enforcement (Operations) Shamsul Nizam Khalil, and Farley Supermarket Manager Wilson Moh were also present.
