Sarikei marine police foiled an illegal logging activity and seized 250 mangrove trunks along the banks of Sungai Pangey in Batang Geligat.

SARIKEI: Two illegal logging activities involving more than 300 mangrove trunks were thwarted by the marine police at different locations on Wednesday (April 27).

The Sarawak Marine Police received a public tipoff on illegal felling at two locations and deployed an intelligence unit to the locations.

The first location – around the banks of Sungai Nyabor – led to the discovery of about 80 mangrove trunks of various sizes.

Meanwhile, the second location around the banks of Sungai Pangey in Batang Geligat, led to the discovery of about 250 mangrove trunks.

No arrests were made as there were no workers or bulldozers at the sites.

The mangrove trunks which did not have any log markings from the Sarawak Forest Department were seized under the Sarawak Forestry Ordinance 2015.

A police report was made and the case is being handled by the Sarikei Forest Department.
