KUCHING: Over 3,000 people came together for a grand Chinese New Year celebration even as the festivities drew to a close on Chap Goh Mei here yesterday.

They thronged the newly-completed Ang Cheng Ho Multipurpose Hall to attend a Leaders-with-the-People programme held in conjunction with Chinese New Year.

The event, organised by Deputy Premier cum Batu Kawa assemblyman Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, was attended by people from all walks of life,

They were also served with popular local delicacies including ‘lemang’ (sticky rice cooked in bamboo), tomato rice, chicken curry, and others.

At the same time, over 100 children present also received ‘ang pow’ (red packets), symbolising good wishes during the new year celebration.

Among those present were Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang; Padawan Municipal Council Chairman (MPP) chairman Tan Kai, and Political Secretary to the Premier Kho Teck Wan.

Yesterday (Feb 24) marked the 15th day of Chinese New Year. It is also known as Chap Goh Mei, which is the Hokkien term for the 15th night of the lunar new year.

Chap Goh Mei also marks Valentine’s Day for the Chinese and traditionally, oranges would be tossed into the rivers and streams for those who are single in the hope of meeting a life partner.
