KUCHING: The inaugural ‘Portrait of Cheongsam: Timeless Elegance and Legacy’ organised by the Sarawak Federation of Chinese Women Association has set another entry for Sarawak in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR).

The record was set for becoming the most ladies-in-cheongsam gathering when a number of 316 participants were gathered at Kuching South City Council’s (MBKS) Palmarium Garden today (Oct 15) for a cheongsam parade.

MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the programme showed the special significance of promoting the timeless elegance and heritage of cheongsam while recording the history of Chinese women in Sarawak.

“Cheongsam highlights the traditional clothing of Chinese women which shows elegance and nobility. Thus, I would like to encourage Chinese women to wear cheongsam more often so that Chinese culture can be passed on for generations to come.

“This event gathers all Sarawak Chinese sisters to have an exchange with each other, promoting mutual friendship with others, and to reflect the local culture of Sarawak through the event,” he said this during his speech at the ‘Portrait of Cheongsam: Timeless Elegance and Legacy’ event today.

Wee said the event will also encourage more women to take the stage and express themselves to the fullest, particularly to convey the beauty of cheongsam and carry forward the culture.

“I wish and hope that you all have the courage to show off the beauty of your cheongsam all you can, displaying the harmony and diverse ethnic groups of Sarawak and at the same time, letting more people know about Sarawak’s cheongsam culture, one which will become the symbol of world harmony,” he added.

The MBOR certificates for the national record were officially handed over by its office manager Lee Pooi Leng to Datuk Wee and Sarawak Federation of Chinese Women Association president Lau Chiew Eng.
