44 homeless in workers’ quarters fire

SIBU: Forty-four factory workers were left homeless after a fire razed their quarters at Jalan Tanjung Kunyit here today.

Fire and Rescue Department Zone 4 chief Andy Alie said a team from the Sibu Central Station was despatched to the scene after they received a distress call at 7.54 am.

“Upon arrival, they found that the 25-room workers’ quarters were beyond saving,” he said in a statement.

Andy said that one of the rooms was vacant while, the others were occupied and housed 25 locals and 19 foreigners.

“Fortunately, no injuries were reported,” he added.

Andy said the fire was brought under control and extinguished around 9.20 am.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still under investigation.
