45 individuals arrested in 28 illegal gambling raids

KUCHING : Sarawak CID chief, SAC Dato’ Dev Kumar said police would continue to weed out illegal gambling activities by raiding illegal gambling outlets in the coming weeks. He said that last week from 13 to 19 November, the state police conducted 28 successful raids on illegal gambling outlets which resulted in the arrest of 45 individuals.

Twenty-four of the raids were against illegal lotteries. The raids were conducted by teams from CID HQs and district CIDs. CID HQs conducted three raids in Kuching while Kuching CID conducted six raids, Miri (4), Sibu (3), Serian (2), Saratok (2), Padawan (2) and one raid each in Sarikei, Kota Samarahan, Limbang, Kapit, Dalat and Tatau.

“The 24 raids on illegal lotteries resulted in the arrest of 28 individuals and seizure of RM4,836.00, mobile phones, portable printers, calculators, betting slips and stationery.

Apart from raids on illegal lottery outlets, one raid was conducted by a team from CID HQs at a counter offering cyber gambling reload services in Kuching which resulted in the arrest of three individuals and seizure of four tablets used for cyber gambling reload,” he said. Dev added that two raids were conducted at cock-fighting pits in Saratok and Tatau.

The Saratok raid resulted in the arrest of five individuals and seizure of five live cockerels and gambling paraphernalia.

The Tatau raid resulted in the arrest of three individuals and seizure of five live cockerels and various gambling paraphernalia. A raid was conducted by Sibu CID team at a taxi stand in Khoo Peng Loong Road which resulted in the arrest of six taxi drivers for gambling in a public place. A pack of cards and RM185 were also seized. Of the 45 arrestees, 33 were males while the rest were females. They were aged between 16 and 69.

One of the arrestees was a foreigner. The arrestees are being investigated for offences under the Common Gaming House Act, 1953 and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance, 1962.
