SIBU: A local man involved in the Machan town riot in August, was charged in the Sessions Court here with attempted murder arising from the riot incident.

Jonwin Umpi, 57, pleaded not guilty to the charge framed under Section 307 of the Penal Code before Judge Saiful Bahari Adzmi today.

If convicted, it carries a potential prison sentence of up to 10 years, accompanied by a fine. If injury is involved, the prison sentence may extend to 20 years.

The court released him on a RM3,000 bail with one surety and scheduled case management for April 3, 2024.

Trial dates were also fixed for May 7 to 9 and May 14 and 15 next year.

He is alleged to have attempted to murder Brandon Lee, 25, by hitting him with a four-wheel-drive vehicle during the riot.

The alleged offence took place on Aug 7 around 4.30 pm in front of a restaurant in Machan town, Kanowit.

In addition, the accused was also previously charged alongside seven others in the Magistrate’s Court for their involvement in the riot.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mark Kenneth Netto and David Bakit Nuing led the prosecution.
