2020 Economic Stimulus Package

KUCHING: The allocation of RM2 billion for immediate implementation of small infrastructure repair and upgrading projects nationwide will have positive spin-off effect on the national economy.

Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) deputy president and former Julau MP Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum was commenting on the fund allocated under the 2020 Economic Stimulus Package announced by interim Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Thursday.

“Since we are not privy to the detailed allocation of the fund, then we will just have to wait.

“The injection of the fund will have a spin off effect on the nation’s economy,” he told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.

On Thursday, interim Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad launched a RM20 billion stimulus package to bolster confidence, strengthen the economy and protect jobs. Of the amount, RM2 billion will be allocated for the immediate implementation of small infrastructure repair and upgrading projects nationwide especially in rural areas.

The allocation would be channelled in partnership with State governments, local authorities, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and local communities to ensure that the projects are effectively implemented for the benefit of the rakyat (people).

It is however unclear how the RM2 billion fund will be divided among the states in Malaysia.
