SIBU: A consultant’s trust in a woman identified as his adopted sister, has caused him to lose RM45,000 in a Macau scam.
Sibu district police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the 67-year-old victim met the woman, Felicia Miley Adams during a six-month course in Auckland, New Zealand in 2009.
“Towards the end of January this year, the complainant received an email from the woman, who gave him her contact number to communicate via Whatsapp.
“The complainant was told that the woman’s parents passed away and she would be coming to Malaysia bringing along USD100,000 and jewelleries,” he said in a statement yesterday.
On March 17, the complainant received a call from the woman who said that the items in a luggage were detained by Customs officers at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) because it was overweight.
Stanley added that the woman then requested him to make payments to secure release of the luggage, which he followed through and made three bank transfers totalling RM45,000.
The complainant only realised that he was scammed when the woman asked him to make more payments.
He pointed out that the woman had deceived the complainant into making payments for a non-existent parcel.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
