Contraband cigs worth over RM47k seized in raid

KUCHING: Personnel from the Sarawak Marine Police Region 5 seized contraband cigarettes valued over RM47,000 during Ops Landai on Wednesday (Jan 20).

Its commander ACP Shamsol Kassim said his men had earlier raided an unnumbered premises at Court Road in Bintangor at around 5.30pm.

He said the premises was used as a storage for various types of cigarettes with unpaid tax and Customs duties.

“Later that evening, the team inspected a grocery store believed to be owned by the store owner and also found various types of contraband cigarettes.

“The raiding team confiscated all the cigarettes from the store and shop which is estimated to be worth over RM47,000,” he said today.

He added that the 61-year-old shop owner was also arrested to facilitate further investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967.
