Book launch part of 2021 Women’s Day celebrations

KUCHING: Two events will be held for Women’s Day by the Department of Women and Family Sarawak (JKWS).

A launching ceremony of a book titled ‘Women in Scholarly Writing’ is set for Nov 20 while the Women’s Day celebration will be held on Nov 23, both at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.

Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said this year’s theme would be ‘Ekspresi Tinta Wanita’

“This year’s Women’s Day will focus on the contributions of women in academic writing and research.

“In line with the theme, the department will published a book titled ‘Women in Scholarly Writing’,” she told the media on Thursday (Oct 14).

The guest of honour for the book launch is the wife of the Head of State, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Ragad Kurdi Taib.

The guest of honour for the Women’s Day 2021 celebration are Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang.

Fatimah explained that both events would be held according to Covid-19 prevention standard operating procedures, and limited to only 200 people.

“There will also be others from 40 districts who will attend the events virtually through live streaming and Zoom app.

“We expect more than 1,000 people tuning in to the live streaming of the two events.”

Fatimah noted that there would be six awards handed out, namely the Datuk Patinggi Laila Taib Award, the Chief Minister’s Women Leadership Award, the Chief Minister’s Entrepreneurship Award, the Chief Minister’s Social Activists Award, the Chief Minister’s Special Achievement Award (women in the field of writing) and The Excellent NGO Organisation Award.

She also disclosed that the Women’s Day celebration would be fixed to March 8 every year, in line with the International Women’s Day.

“Besides that, JWKS will also focus on other important events, such as Family Day on May 11, Senior Citizen’s Day on Oct 1, Children’s Day on Nov 20 and People’s with Disability’s (OKU) Day on Dec 3.”

Also at the press conference were Assistant Community Welfare Minister Datuk Francis Harden Hollis and JWKS director Norita Bawi.
