YBs fork out cash to help fire victims

BETONG: Residents of the razed August Jampi longhouse each received an early aid of RM3,000 on Tuesday (Apr 12).

The aid was given by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Betong MP Datuk Robert Lawson Chuat and Assistant Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, who is also Layar assemblyman Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu.

In a separate event, Betong Division Resident who is also the Chairman of the Betong Division Disaster Management Committee (BDDMC) Richard Michael Abunawas held a meeting with tuai rumah of August Jampi and the heads of each unit of the longhouse.

Also present were Sarawak Premier Political Secretary Dr Richard Rapu, Betong Division Community Welfare officer Uwieng Gimos and officers from the Layar Assemblyman Service Center.

Among matters discussed were the basic needs of the residents, welfare assistance, police reports, temporary accommodation and new longhouse sites.

Rentap when contacted thanked the Betong division disaster management committee for efficiently managing the victims’ affairs.

He also thanked the local community such as non -governmental organisations (NGOs) and individuals who donated various forms of aid such as food items, money, clothing and so on.

As of now, the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at Dewan Panglima Rentap which opened at 3pm last Tuesday, has accommodated 28 residents.

Betong Division Social Welfare Office Disaster Relief Unit coordinator Veronica Jemat said they had channelled immediate assistance in the form of food packs, sleeping equipment, hygiene kits, sarong and face masks to the victims.

Richard Michael had meetings with tuai rumah of August Jampi and head of rooms of the longhouse. Also present, Dr Richard Rapu and Uwieng Gimos.
