TREES FOR TOMORROW

KUCHING: It’s hard to miss a grove of trees in the front of Batu Kawa New Township (unofficially called MJC) any time you visit the place for some shopping or some other purposes.

Very few people remember that the 500 or so trees that make up the little park were planted on October 8 and 11, 2011 by 14 Lions clubs of District 308-A2, Region 1 from Kuching, Serian and Bau who joined forces with Padawan Municipal Council and Sarawak Forestry Corporation.

The trees were meant to help meet the objective of Lions Clubs International’s aim of planting one million trees around the world that year.

Now that the trees have all grown big and tall, the little park is quite popular among joggers and walkers in the area.

Commenting on the success of the project, Padawan Municipal Council chairman Lo Khere Chiang has called on all associations to emulate the Lions clubs’ tree-planting activities by working together.

Lo recalled that together with Region 1 Lions they put up a sign that since then has served as a reminder to all that everybody could and should play a continuous role in environmental conservation.

NINE YEARS AGO … The tree planting carried out on Oct 11, 2011. Lo is fifth from the left.

While congratulating Region 1 Lions especially the organising chairperson then, the late Past President Ivy Fong, for carrying out the project, Lo expressed a belief that the spirit of preserving and conserving the environment would prevail especially among the younger generations.
