KUCHING: The state government is keeping a close watch on the volcanic eruption of Mount Ruang in North Sulawesi, as it awaits guidance from scientists on the potential ash fallout.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg clarified that while areas like Kuching in the south might not be directly affected by the ash fallout, nearby regions like Kota Kinabalu are currently affected due to their proximity to the volcano.

“Because Sulawesi is situated to the north, Kota Kinabalu is currently affected. It also depends on how the wind blows; it is possible that the wind could carry the ash elsewhere.

“For us in the southern parts, it might not reach us, but by then, its force would likely have diminished.

“What we’re concerned about are the ash particles, which is why flights are affected due to these small particles. Let’s wait for the scientists’ advice,” he said.

He was fielding questions from reporters after attending Deputy Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi’s Hari Raya open house at Taman Gaya, Petra Jaya here last night (Apr 18).

Earlier, reports indicated that there was volcanic ash within the Kota Kinabalu flight information region (FIR) due to the eruption of Mount Ruang, disrupting multiple air routes and airports in the area.

However, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has reassured the public about the quality of air in East Malaysia, affirming that the ash cloud resulting from Mount Ruang’s eruption has not affected surface air quality in Sabah and Sarawak, as evidenced by the Air Pollutant Index (API).

The eruption of Mount Ruang occurred on Apr 16 at 9.45 am.

Indonesia has since raised its volcanic eruption warning to level 4 (CAUTION), anticipating the Ruang volcano to remain active and may erupt from time to time.

MetMalaysia stated that it will continue monitoring the eruption’s impact, and the public is urged to stay informed through MetMalaysia’s official website www.met.gov.my, social media channels, and the MyCuaca app for the latest and accurate weather updates.
