KUCHING: Sarawak Muaythai athlete, Awangku Abdul Rahman Awang Marajaya created a nice surprise in the Philippines International Muaythai Championship (Fet Rao Super 4 Series) held in Benguet, Philippines, recently.

He won a silver medal after losing out to the host athlete, Lance Valenzuela in the final action of the 51kg category. Awangku, who is a trainer from PS Sebiew Muaythai, Bintulu overcame another Philippine representative, Karol Maguide in the semifinals. His impressive achievement was commended by the president of the Muaythai Association of Sarawak (PMNS), Haji Jumaat Ibrahim.

“Well done and congratulations to Awangku Abdul Rahman Awang Marajaya for his success. “Although it was his first international appearance, he managed to create a surprise,” said Jumaat, and thanked Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) and Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) for their support.

“Without continuous support from the state government, it will be difficult for associations to progress and hone talents in particular as preparation for the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2018,” he added. Awangku Abdul Rahman Awang Marajaya were among the five Muaythai athletes from Malaysia who competed in the championship where the national team brought home one gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

The gold medal was contributed by Nur Amisha Azrilrizal (60kg female), Mohd Sadam Yahya won another silver (60kg male). while two bronze medals were contributed by Nur Khairunnisa Muhamad Riduan (54kg female) and Mohamad Azeem Ismail (67kg male).
