KUCHING: The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sarawak’s (ACCCIS) has conveyed their appreciation to the Sarawak government for abolishing the State Sales Tax (SST) on imported tyres.

Its secretary-general Datuk Jonathan Chai said the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has been receptive to the views and suggestions expressed by ACCCIS and the stakeholders over many issues encountered by the business community including the SST imposed on the imported tyres and the hike in quit rents for commercial and industrial properties.

“Of course, the tyre importers and dealers will need to come up with a mechanism and responsible approach in dealing with the used tyres making sure that they would not cause any environmental problems,” he told New Sarawak Tribune when contacted.

In connection with the matter, he has been given to understand by Sarawak Tyre Dealers And Retreaders Association that they will approach and hold a dialogue with the relevant local recycling companies as soon as possible to deliberate on the matter, especially the collection of used tyres in the remote townships and interior rural areas.

“As directed by the Premier, the Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian will also monitor the progress in coming up with the solution to resolve the issue

“And I believe the problem could be resolved and a win-win approach would be adopted by the stakeholders concerned with the noble objective of environmental protection,” said Chai.
