KUCHING: Several new access roads have been proposed to ease traffic at the Saratok intersection.

Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri said the absence of a flyover in Simpang Saratok often causes traffic jams of up to two kilometres.

“Although it is understood that the flyover at the intersection is proposed in the second phase of the Pan Borneo Highway, but we expect it to be built soon,”

“And as an alternative, we are also applying under the Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA) to build some new access roads to Saratok town,” he said when contacted today.

He pointed out that the project should be regarded as an urgent priority.

“For example, during the festive season or when there are crowds, the exits and entrances at the Saratok junction are always congested. What’s worrying is that it’s happening more and more often.

“Therefore we sincerely hope that the proposal is implemented to ensure smooth journey of road users,” he said.

Regarding other proposed projects under the BDDA, Mohamad expressed confidence that the effort would boost development in the Kalaka constituency.

“Our focus is to ensure that every allocation is used as best as possible to realise the development agenda.

“Especially involving development projects in villages, longhouses, parks and so on – distributed fairly according to the current needs and preferences of local residents.

In a separate development, a site visit was held for the road project from Rumah Panjang Senyawan to the old Saratok sawmill area.

Mohamad said the road will be implemented in phases to facilitate the community around Senyawan, Sungai Antu to Saratok town, with shorter travel time.
