SARATOK: The development of agricultural infrastructure across all areas within the Kalaka constituency aims to ensure residents can double their income, says Mohamad Duri.

It is estimated that more than one-third, or over RM60mil, of the total allocation of RM200mil from the Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA) for the Kalaka constituency is earmarked for agricultural infrastructure development.

According to the Kalaka assemblyman, this investment is crucial for ensuring food security.

“People may not witness the infrastructure development as it occurs in the forest. However, the impact is significant as long as it enables residents to double their income.”

Mohamad made these remarks after presenting grants for Minor Rural Projects (MRP) here today.

He pointed out that while many people own land, lack of road access and reliance on river transportation make it difficult for them to develop their land.

To address this issue and heed grassroots aspirations, the Sarawak government is investing in infrastructure development to promote and intensify the agriculture sector.

Around one-third or more than RM60mil is allocated for building farm roads, bridges, and sluice gates, aiming to encourage farming activities.

“Our goal is to ensure food security and improve socioeconomics indirectly,” Mohamad said, adding that both the state and the people will greatly benefit from these initiatives.

Currently, approximately RM2.2mil worth of agricultural infrastructure projects have commenced, with more to follow.

These projects are implemented by four main agencies: the Public Works Department (JKR), Saratok District Council (MDS), Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS), and Department of Agriculture (DOA).

Mohamad urged residents to utilise their land effectively to increase their income.

During the ceremony, he also presented MRP grants to several surau management committees and longhouse women’s bureaus, continuing the grant presentation to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) previously conducted.
