KUCHING: Swinburne University is working with private companies to explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help solve the labour shortage in the palm oil sector.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that there’s a long-standing issue of not having enough workers, especially for harvesting.

“Both Swinburne University and our private companies are looking at using AI and sensors to identify ripe fruits from the unripe ones. This research could reduce our dependence on foreign workers,” he said this in the press conference after launching the East Malaysia Palm and Lauric Oils Conference and Exhibition 2023 today (Sept 5).

Abang Johari further encouraged local industry players to embrace new technology.

“With our economy growing, our technology must also advance, ensuring our industry remains strong,” he said.

Also present were Bursa Malaysia Berhad chairman Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, Bursa Malaysia Berhad chief executive officer Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift, Ministry of Plantation and Commodities Senior Undersecretary Severinus Tukah, Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Martin Ben, Malaysia Palm Oil Board (MPOB) director-general Datuk Dr Ahmad Parveez Ghulam and Sarawak Oil Palm Plantation Owners Association (SOPPOA) Eric Kiu.
