KUCHING: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to become Malaysia’s next Prime Minister as his appointment was agreed upon by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council.

Research fellow at Universiti Malaya’s Centre for Democracy and Elections (UMcedel) Associate Professor Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi said according to the agreement, after Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, it would be Anwar’s turn to become PM.

“This is very clear and Dr Mahathir himself has admitted to it in his statements and speeches, as well as statements by other PH leaders,” he said.

Awang Azman said it was agreed by all the component party presidents for Dr Mahathir to pass the baton to Anwar, adding that it did not involve opposition parties like Umno, PAS, MCA and any other parties which are not PH component to make the decision.

He also said the decision to appoint Anwar also did not come from certain individuals like Datuk Seri Azmin Ali and Baru Bian, whose political future in PH, he said, was unstable as their voice was not in tandem with the decisions of their party’s president, the central leaders council (MPP) and the party political bureau.

“They dare to protest against the presence of Anwar at the Sarawak PKR convention in Miri during the weekend,” added Awang Azman.

Awang Azman said that the people had punished PH during the Tanjung Piai by-election when PH failed in fulfilling its election manifesto.

Awang Azman also opined that if Anwar was not appointed as the next PM, people would definitely be rejecting PH even more.
